
Brian Skoog is an American tenor known for his "powerful" (Cleveland Classical) and "fine lyric tenor” (Toledo Blade). His current season includes two role and company debuts as Jake in Second Nature with Opera Fayetteville and Lurcanio in Ariodante with Opera NEO. Skoog also appears this season as Ruiz in Il trovatore with Toledo Opera and as Mozart in Rimsky-Korsakov's Mozart and Salieri with The Cleveland Opera. In 2020, He was scheduled to sing the role of The Defendant in Gilbert & Sullivan's Trial by Jury, as well as making his debut with Opera Maine as Roderick in Philip Glass’s The Fall of the House of Usher, but these productions were canceled due to ongoing public health concerns. His truncated 2019-2020 season included performances of Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings with Heights Chamber Orchestra and Edmondo in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut with The Cleveland Opera. In 2018, Skoog was a Bonfils-Stanton Apprentice Artist with Central City Opera, singing the role of Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte for the Nina Odescalchi Kelly Family Matinee and the dual role of Larry/Matt in Mollicone's The Face on the Barroom Floor. Recent seasons include roles with Aspen Opera Theater, Central City Opera, Cleveland Opera Theater, Dayton Opera, Nashville Opera, Toledo Opera, and Utah Festival Opera.
Skoog is an active performer of oratorio and concert work across the United States. In recent seasons, he has appeared as a soloist with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Heights Chamber Orchestra, Stambaugh Festival Orchestra, and Toledo Symphony, as well as with chamber ensembles across the country. Last season, Skoog appeared in a series of performances of Robert Schumann's Dichterliebe in partnership with The Cleveland Opera. A champion of new music and living composers, Skoog was recently the tenor soloist for the world premiere of Margaret Brouwer's environmental oratorio Voice of the Lake. Seen and Heard International praised his "brilliant" singing and called him "one of the highlights.” He will soon appear on a CD of Brouwer's compositions on the NAXOS label. In 2022, he will debut the song cycle "Quarantine Poems for Tenor and Three Bassoons" by composer Ryan Charles Ramer.
Skoog completed his graduate work at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with acclaimed tenor Vinson Cole and appeared in many leading roles with CIM Opera Theatre under the direction of David Bamberger and the baton of Harry Davidson. Skoog received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Alabama, where he studied with Sandra Walker and Doff Procter. During his time at Alabama, he performed as a soloist with The University Singers under Dr. John Ratledge at Carnegie Hall and the Seoul Arts Center in South Korea. Skoog has completed many prestigious artist training programs, including Aspen Opera Theater Center, Central City Opera, Dayton Opera, Nashville Opera, Pensacola Opera, and Toledo Opera.
